Tell me any others we should add! Style, Lifestyle and Attitude: Cross-country: XC++ - Cross-country is what MTBs were invented for[1]. XC+ - XC is the best type of riding, but other stuff is kinda fun sometimes. XC - Just one of many ways to have fun. XC- - My mates will drag me away from the local jumps now and again. XC-- - It's impossible to ride up hills on my bike. Downhill: DH+++ - Wot no chairlift? DH++ - My main MTB has more than five inches of suspension travel, front and rear, and only one chainring. DH+ - Those other trails are only there to get you to the top of a good DH. DH - A good dose of speed is always good in the middle of a ride. DH- - Climbing is harder, so I enjoy it more. DH-- - I walk down stuff all my mates can ride. Jumping: J++ - I'm not happy with my wheels on the ground. J+ - The world looks better from twelve inches up. J - Jumping is great, but you have to ride to get to the best bomb holes. J- - Sure I can get air, but I only use it to get where I'm going faster. J-- - My wheels are always in contact with the ground. Location: L+++ - I live in Durango / Chamonix / Marin County / The Lake District L++ - I moved house to be closer to top trails. L+ - There's a great selection of trails near to where I live. L - Whether I ride nearby or travel, I have a good time either way. L- - I prefer to travel to trails, I get a much better ride than I do locally. L-- - I have to travel to ride, there's nothing worthwhile nearby. L--- - I live in Cambridge. Hills: H++ - These things aren't called MOUNTAIN bikes for nothing: bring 'em on! H+ - I like a good, hilly ride to let me know I've been out. H - Hills are nice, but sometimes it's good to just cruise on the flat too. H- - If it gets too steep, I don't enjoy the ride so much. H-- - Flat is good. H--- - If it doesn't have a canal next to it, I'm not riding it. H---- - I live in Cambridge. Frequency: Fr+++ - I do not have a house. I sleep under my bike. Fr++ - I ride every day. I have to, it keeps me sane. Fr+ - I make sure I ride as often as the rest of my life allows. Fr - MTBing is great, but there's loads of other things I like too. Fr- - I get out as and when I can, but not that much. Fr-- - I really should get out on the bike, but it just doesn't happen. Fr--- - Riding? What's that? RetroGrouchiness: RG++++ - My only off-road bike is an original 1950s clunker. RG+++ - I have not yet chaged over to using HyperGlide or 7-speed. RG++ - I have not bought a MTB for several years. RG+ - If it works, why change it? RG - It's good to get on my old bike to remind me of times past. RG- - RapidFire+ is better than thumbshifters. RG-- - All my bikes are less than two years old. RG--- - 9-speed is better than 8-speed. RG---- - I am Mike Burrows. Maintenance: M+++ - I have built a bike frame from a bunch of tubes. M++ - I do all my own maintenance, including building wheels. M+ - I everything myself except the really big jobs. M - I do as much as I can, but the bike's in the shop a fair bit. M- - Sure I can change a tube, but I prefer to give most of it to pros so it's done right. M-- - What's a spanner? Racing: Ra+++ - I'm a professional / sponsored racer. Ra++ - Race to live, live to race. Ra+ - I know what my anaerobic threshold is. Ra - Racing is great on good courses to make a change from normal riding. Ra- - I race now and again if the club is going along. Ra-- - I'd rather prove myself against the terrain than other riders. Fitness: Fi+++ - I am Ned Overend. Fi++ - I'm always first to the top of a climb whoever I ride with. Fi+ - Most people consider me to be pretty fit. Fi - I can keep up with most people, most of the time. Fi- - I really should ride more, I might be able to keep up better. Fi-- - Riding on the level leaves me out of breath. Fi--- - Freewheeling downhill leaves me out of breath. Other Sports: O++ - I play other sports a lot / I cross-train / I'm a triathlete. O+ - Other sports are good to help build all round fitness. O - I do a few other sports, whatever I fancy. O- - I occasionally do something else for a laugh. O-- - MTBing is the one true way. Add a * if you do other sports mainly to get fit for mountain biking, e.g. O+* Personal: X/Y/Z## - Gender: Female / Male / Not saying, followed by age (or ?? if not saying). Can be 20s, 30s, 40s etc. (e.g. X28) R# - Number of years riding MTBs. [1] This is of course, historically inaccurate.
